NEW ORLEANS BRASS BAND CAMP (August 9 – 11)
As part of this year’s Springfield Jazz & Roots Festival, Blues to Green (the presenting nonprofit) and the Community Music School of Springfield are partnering to immerse young Springfield musicians in the spirit and sound of New Orleans street music. The camp will strive to foster pride in a rich musical heritage and give youth the unparalleled experience of learning from masters of the music. The three-day camp, running from 9:30am – 2pm will focus on the history and the making of music in the tradition of New Orleans brass bands—with the syncopated rhythms, improvisation, and call and response interaction of instruments (as well as voices)—reflecting the African roots of the music. The experience will culminate in a performance of songs learned at the camp, at the Springfield Jazz & Roots Festival. Students will be joined by other musicians, and anyone caught up in the spirit, in a Secondline parade that will make its way from the Community Music School on State Street over to Court Square, starting at 11:30 am.
Please contact Kristin Neville of Blues to Green (413) 219-8229 or Eileen McCaffery of
